Symmetry Wood is a biomaterials manufacturer combating forest destruction by creating high-performance, petroleum-free alternatives to precious woods like ebony, rosewood, and mahogany, which drive wasteful high-grade logging in the tropics. Symmetry's patent-pending product, Pyrus™, is made from upcycled food waste, exceeds the hardness of maple and oak, and resembles precious woods in appearance. The core ingredient of our material is bacterial cellulose (BC), which is generated as SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast) waste from the kombucha industry. It can also be fermented from various other kinds of waste, including agriculture residue and even textile mill runoff. While there are other companies, such as Polybion, Modern Synthesis, and Kombucha Biomaterials, using BC for leather and paper production, Symmetry is the first to ever make solid wood from it.
