In April 2021, an eye-opening waste opportunity within the mussel industry came to light. The mussel industry plays a significant role in the generation of byssus fibers, which are combined with live mussel waste and processed alongside other animal by-products in an energy recovery process or disposed of in landfills. Both these practices contribute to the generation of methane gas, a greenhouse gas that is more than 25 times as potent as CO2 in trapping heat in the atmosphere. Recognizing the importance of tackling climate change, Seastex Ltd was founded in June 2021 with the aim of joining the carbon removal revolution.
